December 19th: Holiday Lights

Connection. That’s what we as human beings seek. To quote Brené Brown, “Connection is why we’re here. It gives purpose and meaning to our lives. This is what it’s all about.” (The Power of Vulnerability TED Talk)

I was discussing today’s topic with my favorite person, and I asked her what her take was. To which her response was community. That the holiday lights and decorations that we can see around our hometown or city, are us as individuals coming together as a community.

Later as I thought about our discussion, I discovered that she was right.

As we count our way down to Christmas, take a moment today, tonight, or any night from now to travel the roads near your home to enjoy the lights and decorations for the holiday season. Better still, turn on some Christmas music and make it a family outing.

Holiday Decorations:

There is a lot that can be said about the lights and decorations that have become a part of the holiday season. Both the allegorical and literal symbolism behind lights which offer hope and cheer.

For Christmas lights show us that we are not alone. That there are those around us who have chosen to celebrate the core ideals and values that are a part of Christmas. The Christmas spirit, hope, love, compassion, joy, and warmth.

The Santas, reindeers, sleds, snowmen, wreaths, and glowing trees and presents are all symbols of not just the holiday season, but the community that we share.

In my hometown, we have a competition each year, where houses can sign up to compete in holiday décor. Then a list is compiled and offered to any who wish, to drive to the various houses and vote. Here is one small example of connection and community that can be found wherever human beings reside.

Turn It Into An Outing:

Christmas is about community. It acknowledges the connection that we share as people. Even more intimately is the connection that we share with friends and family. I think you’ll agree with me, that these connections are the ones we hold most dear.

So this holiday season, take a moment away from the hustle and bustle and take a family/friend outing to enjoy the holiday decorations. Slide into your seats, buckle your seat belts, crank the heat, turn up the Christmas music, and take a drive.

What houses are there to see? Which one did you like best? Why?

Then come home and drink some coffee or hot cocoa and discuss what caught your eye. Take a moment this holiday season to connect with those you hold most dear, your favorite people. For that is why we’re here.

Merry Christmas Chickadee!
