Patriotic Love: Why We Love Our Country

June, this month heralds with it many changes on a personal and global level. To that end, I want to spend this month focusing on our love.

As the world continues to turn and we all enter a new period, I feel that it is important for us to remember the love we have in our life, and to consider any necessary changes we need to make.

As I was considering the theme of this month, I started with the events of my own personal month. Then I considered what I needed to hear right now. With these thoughts in mind I wish to start with our patriotic love. The love we have for our home; our country.

Our Home:

I am an American. What are you?

When I consider my homeland, this not only includes my hometown, my state, or my nation, but also our history. The mistakes we have made, and the wonderful historic moments. The quality of life we have created and perpetuate.

Now more than ever, does the quality and heart of our nation play a massive role in each of our lives. The decisions made and actions taken has an impact on our present and on our future.

How to Balance Our Internal Reality w/ Our External One

We’re seeing this truth vividly these days, and this acts as a wonderful reminder about the interwovenness of our personal lives and the world around us (external reality).

With this reminder I want you to take the time to think and feel about our country.

Step One: Analyze.

With each move America makes on a national and state level, we are being given data. Information about the quality and heart of our homeland.

Take this time to notice, to learn. In this way we can analyze the present and accurate truth about our country.

Step Two: Think & Feel.

When we see our nation in action, how do you feel? What do you think about the decisions she has made?

Here’s What I Think & Feel:

  • Pride- For our unity.
For the Veterans

When I consider my family and friends and the people I have met at this time I am filled with pride. On a personal level and even on a grander scale, the very best and heart centered action has been taken by the people of the world.

  • Dissatisfaction & Unacceptance- The inequality present on a national level.

I do not pretend to know all things or even how a country is run, but this I do know to be wrong. When our officials have chosen to close down the Mom&Pop stores of our communities and yet allow the big box stores to remain open we stab the heart of America. We need those small family stores. We need each of us.

  • Joy- For the displays of local aid.

This past week I went to pick up food from our local hamburger joint. While there another woman who was paying tipped the restaurant ten dollars. This simple affordable act spoke volumes about this woman, and about us as people. I feel joy each time I witness or experience moments of local and even global support. Proof positive that we do not walk alone.

  • Sadness- For the perpetuation of fear.

As I stay informed with the media I experience a great sadness at those who spend their time berating others and perpetuating a life and world of fear. If they have time to attempt to drag us down into despair, they have time to help, to heal.

  • Excitement- For what is yet to come.

When we as a people can come together, we move mountains. We end wars, we end the perpetuation of injustice. As we come out of this period I am excited to see what we do. As a nation and as a globe. With life filled with limitless possibilities my mind cannot comprehend the possibilities that may arrive moving forward.

  • Hesitant & even Rebellious- At the request of my leaders.

Some of the decisions that my leaders have chosen to display their true colors. Perpetuating fear, attempting malicious and ego-based control, I will not comply without considering the request my country makes of me. Are the orders what is best for us as a people, or what’s best for them?

  • Loud and Strong- At the voices that herald the change we desire.
Freedom

I look at the news and know that like myself there are those in my country who choose to be more that puppets. With minds and hearts of our own, we as a people, in a land for the people, are making our desires and unhappiness known. It is a time for change. A healing change.

What do you think & feel?

Step Three: What’s your action?

The most wonderful thing about my country, is her people. It’s you and me. Why?

We create the world we live in. as a country and as a planet; and I believe that this country has demonstrated this face time and time again. From our start, when we as a people declared our independence and took action.

Our Independence

To protest. Action taken on a grand scale…

  • Civil Rights movement.
  • Women’s Suffrage movement.
  • Equality for all race, creed, color, gender, and sexual orientation.

We shape this nation. We the people…

We still do and it’s time for us to kick our action into high gear.

That way we can…

  • Restore our economy.
  • Ensure our freedoms.
  • Support each other.
  • Do more that survive… thrive.

To take action we can:

For Our Soldiers: Past, Present, & Future
  • Vote in an educated manner.
  • Advocate those who promote the best of humanity.
  • Write letters & make phone calls.
  • Protest.
  • Boycott.
  • Speak up.
  • Utilize our God Given Rights.
  • Unite.
  • Display compassion & honesty.

Final Thoughts:

My love has grown since I was a child. The more I’ve learned and the more I have seen, the more I love.

But my love is not assumed or unearned.

Love must be earned. Through actions, words, we have the opportunity to analyze. From this data we can judge a country’s or person’s quality and worth.

I don’t love my country because I was born here, but because at her heart she was built upon principles I place as a highest value. Each day I strive to live those ideals, so they may be reality. And I witness so many around me do the same.

Why do you love your country? What actions do you take?

Challenge:

This week look around. See the good and the areas that need improvement. Consider your country, why do you love her? What will you do to help ensure your country’s continued growth and healing?
